Travel Insurance Terrorist Questions

The terrorist attack at the Westgate mall in Nairobi, Kenya last month is still vexing government officials and security agencies alike. The strange event resulted in more than 175 injuries and 62 deaths. While authorities now have the situation under control, some travelers may be reconsidering their travel plans to east Africa.

Squaremouth, a travel insurance comparison service, recently compiled position statements released from several of their 23 travel insurance providers regarding the incident. Those who travel or are responsible for clients who travel to potential hot spots will be interested to see the range in how such an incident is viewed and handled by a variety of travel insurance carriers. Statements were released on or around September 23, 2013.

Travelex Travel Insurance

“For travelers who purchased a Travelex travel protection prior to September 21, 2013, Terrorist Act coverage will be in effect with regards to the recent mall attack occurring in Nairobi. Coverage will apply to travelers who are currently in, or are scheduled to travel to this destination, provided the Terrorist Act occurs within 30 days of your scheduled departure date.” Read full statementInsurance and terrorism

 CSA Travel Protection

“Customers are strongly encouraged to read their Description of Coverage or Insurance Policy for details regarding their available coverage.  For plans that do offer coverage for terrorist acts, please note that there is no coverage for this specific act under any plans purchased on or after Saturday, September 21, 2013.  Please contact CSA Travel Protection with questions.” Read full statement.

HCC Medical Insurance Services

“HCCMIS excludes coverage for terrorism related claims if the US Department of State has issued a travel warning and the member has chosen or refused to depart from that country after the travel warning is issued. The US Department of State issued a travel warning in the country of Kenya on July 5th, 2013.” Read full statement.

iTravelInsured

“iTravelInsured plans would not provide coverage against a “Terrorist Incident” occurring in Nairobi if travel  insurance is purchased on September 22, 2013 or later.  Nairobi and the area within 120 miles of Nairobi must remain incident free for at least 90 days and no travel warnings issued by the U.S. State Department in order for a “Terrorist Incident” to be covered for Nairobi in the future.” Read full statement.
